Special Educational Needs Department

Miss Sarah Ellis is the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery. She leads a dedicated team of inclusion staff who support all children with additional needs; these include Learning Mentors, Family Liaison Officer, Speech and Language Teaching Assistant, English as an Additional Language Teaching Assistant, a Welfare Officer, an AEN Assistant and a team of 1:1 Learning Support Assistants.

The school is a designated mainstream specialist provision for children with physical impairments/disabilities. Our facilities include carefully designed care suites, a sensory and soft play area with disabled accessibility throughout the school. As an inclusive school we ensure that all children are catered for within the whole school community, with access to all areas of the curriculum, including breakfast and after school clubs.

At Garlinge Primary School and Nursery we work closely with The Foreland Special School. Class 'GS', is a Foreland group of children, whose learning day is spent either within a specially designated classroom or one of our mainstream classes. Many firm friendships have been made between the mainstream and special school children, and these friends are often invited to special events happening at the The Foreland Special School or at Garlinge Primary.

It is recognised that many children will experience a time when they may have an additional need during their primary school experience. Depending upon the need, a member of the inclusion team will assess and provide the necessary support to ensure that the child's needs are being addressed. Our Well-Being Team will be there for children who are struggling both academically and emotionally.

The school Behaviour Policy is inclusive, understanding that all children are different and implements approaches that fully support behaviour that is conducive to learning and promotes a child's progress. Regular communication with parents/carers ensures that they are fully informed and able to support their child with a consistent approach from both school and home, enabling the best outcomes for children at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery.

Please see our policies page for further Inclusion policies.
